Netflix nights: Once upon a time

netflix stream team Is it that time?

That would be Once upon a _ time 🙂

Our days are bracketed by Netflix at the moment. Big gets up early and after her paper round, settles down for an episode or two of House. Then, after Tim has his news at lunchtime, the younger children get their turn, and often watch Umi Zoomi, or Pokemon, or Legends of Chima, or any of a number of the children’s shows. (They worked their way through Puss in boots already 😉 )

Come the evening with children finally in bed, Tim and I get our moment. We watched Jericho (apocalyptic drama), which was excellent, but sadly truncated, then Warehouse 13, which we very much enjoyed too. (It starts off quite silly, but gets rather dark.) Then we moved on to Continuum, which was a bit twisty turny – dystopian time travelling SF. We had a quick dalliance with Kimmy Schmidt, and now we’re on Once upon a time.

once upon a timeIt’s good. Twisty turny and tangled, with fairytales and other fictional tales all in a big melting pot of magic.

Robert Carlyle is just fabulous. He makes this show, in all his different roles. From the manic giggling of the malevolent imp, through to the tortured father seeking his lost son across all the realms, he holds the show together.

It’s pure escapist fiction. It’s complete nonsense most of the time. But we keep sitting down and watching it, night after night. We’re trying to spin it out, so we don’t watch more than a couple of episodes in an evening, because when we do run out, we’ll have to find something new, and that’s not easy.

I don’t really know what we did before Netflix. Before we were invited on to the Stream Team, I’d discounted it as an entertainment option. I didn’t really think of it as a huge pile of box sets which is effectively what it is. It’s changing how we consume TV series I think – why would you want to watch just one episode of a show a week when you can watch it round the clock? I do wonder when the networks are going to catch up to it all and stop the kind of series negotiations and games with scheduling we’ve currently got going on.

All of which is a roundabout way to say we really rather enjoy having Netflix. Have you tried it? Got any show recommendations for us?

  1. Have you watched Grimm, Jax? That seems like it might go down well. (Although Big might like it too!)
The Good Wife? Might be too mundane for you! OITNB is very good – series 3 coming soon.

Haven’t tried Grimm, will look it up, thanks. Tim likes OITNB, it didn’t do it for me.

Haven’t tried The Good Wife, something about it just didn’t appeal.
