Perfectly Norman by Tom Percival

I think it’s fair to say we are Tom Percival fans. We’ve several of his books on our shelves, including the very limited edition Hugo and the Imaginary Zoo. Perfectly Norman is a wonderful addition to his range, and I’m thrilled to be joining the blog tour.

The premise is simple, as most excellent picture books start out. What if, one day, you grew wings?

The children *loved* this idea. Tigerboy in particular was enthralled with the idea of flying everywhere instead of walking. Seeing the top of trees, clouds from both sides, making friends with birds.

The idea though that this wonderful ability could be a problem didn’t occur to him immediately. Seeing how Norman was afraid of standing out was something we talked about quite a bit, and realising that actually his parents *were* there for him and were just happy if he was happy was very reassuring. Reminded me that sometimes we parents take for granted that our children know that we accept and cherish them without saying, and maybe sometimes we need to be more vocal about our support.

And when it comes down to it, this is a beautifully illustrated book too, I love how emotion is conveyed by colour or lack of it. Simple, and very effective.

Highly recommended.
