No new year resolutions here.

I’m not sure January is the best time for fresh starts. The days are still too short, the weather too grim – I don’t feel full of energy and get up and go to make drastic changes. Little incremental baby steps, those I might be able to achieve, and I can keep on with changes already in progress, but new things? No.

I can keep on running. 3 miles yesterday, taking just over 28 minutes – my pace is down around 9.20 for a mile even on this longer run. I’m eyeing up scenic routes along the sea shore and thinking it’s nearly time I tried some. Be nice to do something other than pound in and out of all the residential roads. This morning I pushed the pace and managed 1.22 miles in 10.45 iirc. First sub 9 min mile pace, though I’m feeling it now rather. And (whisper) I’ve finally lost a little bit more weight. Still nearly a stone to go, but at least we’re heading in the right direction.

I can keep on reading. Another book yesterday, and plenty more to review that I’ve read to the babe. More emails received and sent regarding the book challenge, and stuff about stuff to review.

I can keep on educating. We’re doing mathletics – Big is working on estimating, and it’s not something that comes naturally to her, so there was plenty of calm encouragement and explanation. Along with a bit of bribery and corruption – when they counted the coins in our change basket they were promised 10% of the total, and then we got on to discussing charities as that’s what we’re going to do with the coppers.

I can do housework. Washing, drying, folding clothes. Washing up, tidying, cleaning and cooking. Made Big the birthday tea that she should have had on Sunday, but I ended up stopping with her at the leisure centre, so couldn’t come home to make cauliflower cheese and roasties. Enjoyed it last night though.

And I can do a bit of sorting. Took the baby clothes out of the baby’s drawer so that I can fit in the pre toddler clothes. Cleared the hall table, mainly to find the bit of paper with the orthodontist appts on it – they start in a couple of weeks time, seems likely Big will be braced up fairly soon. And I spent 2 1/2 hours clearing, sorting and organising in their bedroom – I found the end of Small’s bed, his toybox *and* some carpet. Not very much carpet it has to be admitted, but some.

So those are the achievements of my days, and those will have to do. I can’t do newyearnewanything, but at least I’ve learnt not to set myself up for failure by trying to. Maybe in the spring…

  1. In my books January sets the precedent for the rest of the year and seems like you’re on top notch form from the beginning of 2011 – already making time to fit in running and reading and educating takes mega organisation and hats of to you. The sorting out of stuff always makes me feel better and that I’m finally getting closer to a more beautiful home even if its only baby steps.
I like how you recognise that these are already achievements – but I always think it’s fun to add one new thing to the year. Truth is – there are hundreds of new things we achieve in one year alone, and we should just pick one before it materialises and then be doubly happy when we get there!

    1. Hi Maria – yes, I suppose January could be viewed as precedent setting. I think it’s important to get into the swing of things slowly, and maybe January should be consolidation and pampering time for most. It’s fine to add something new so long as what you’re adding doesn’t just become a stick to beat yourself with!

  2. I don’t make resolutions or fresh starts in January either. Good work on the running, you are fast! I have always run at an 11 or 12 min pace per mile. Well done on losing weight too, always feels good to “feel good” Maria x

    1. Hi Maria mark 2! Am I fast? I didn’t realise that. It doesn’t feel very fast. I’m pleased that it’s starting to feel like running rather than uncoordinated waving around of my arms and legs, which is how it was when I started!

  3. Funny, here I am preparing a post on how the new years is ALL about fresh starts for me. I’m so much better doing that sort of thing at the beginning of a new year. We’re just all so different.
