Missing the point.

The eventual aim is to feed GM-enhanced oils to animals such as chickens and cattle, to produce omega 3 enriched meat, milk and eggs.

This would provide a sustainable source of fish oil amid concern over dwindling fish stocks.

“The big problem is that fish (and fish oils) is a very seriously diminishing natural resource,” said Professor Napier.

“There are big problems with the sustainability of natural fish stocks and there are also concerns about pollution of the marine environment so we’re interested in trying to produce a sustainable alternative source with these fish oils.”

I don’t want them to use genetic engineering to create crops to feed to cattle to feed us. How about we stop overfishing and manage the fishstocks better?

Or given that it appears some of this is being done to combat obesity, ppl just eat less and run around more?

Is it only me who thinks the human race doesn’t half take the long route around solving problems at some points???

  1. Bravo! I totally agree. Awhile back Tim over at What I’ve Learned so Far asked “What if we just stop doing stupid stuff?” What indeed? If you haven’t read it already, I highly recommend The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Very compelling.

  2. surely there are enough other foods out there rich in Omega whatevers that we don’t need to genetically modify anything??? but yes, gettting a grip on fishing would be a damned good place to start, even if it’s just investing in fish farming and beating certain other European nations over the head until they realise that catching all the baby cod is not a good long term option.

  3. I think the fishing business is horrifyingly stupid. I don’t think the fishing industry and the people in it will stop until they have managed to make fishing completely uneconomic. They refuse to acknowedge what scientists are saying and treat it as a triumph when they manage to keep quotas up at levels which will wipe the fish, and fishermen out.
