Major discovery from MIT primed to unleash solar revolution – MIT News Office

In a revolutionary leap that could transform solar power from a marginal, boutique alternative into a mainstream energy source, MIT researchers have overcome a major barrier to large-scale solar power: storing energy for use when the sun doesnt shine.

I wish I understood this, but at least it sounds hopeful.

  1. I saw this yesterday. I have never understood why we can’t use solar power to pump water up to a water tower, and use hydro-electric power at night.

  2. Water storage of power is good in theory, but I don’t know if there’s an adequate supply of suitable hills in Wales waiting to be hollowed out.
Also I don’t know how efficient it is – I’d be interested to see how the efficiency of this groovy new room-temperature pH-neutral electrolysis compares with pumping water up and down in Wales.

  3. We have alot of hydro dams here, so we could use solar during the day and hold the water for the night. There is a community outside of Calgary that gets 90% of its energy from solar.
