Just one more thought post Cybher

I’m lying actually, I’ve got half a dozen Cybher inspired posts rattling around in my brain. But this one is clawing at the back of my eyes, so I’m going to set it free now.

It’s about that no follow link thing. Ppl were talking about the legality of no follow links, and I think in most cases they were really discussing breaking google’s guidelines. But there are advertising issues with disclosure, and I’ve discovered that it’s the quickest way to make some PRs go quiet, explain that you only give no follow links.

But one Mrs Kerry Jean Lister, PR for large firms like Lego and so on, pointed out that her clients spend lots of money appearing where they want to on google, and the reviews they get from bloggers are for a different purpose. They are to appeal to your specific, highly engaged, readership. Not to game google, not to shade the results – but personality marketing, on your reputation. So no follow links are fine for that.

I just wish a few more PRs were similarly clued up.

  1. I wish I understood what that means. I’ve just read the wikipedia thing and my brain hurts – maybe I’ll try again later!

    1. I’ll have another go at explaining it on my techy blog 🙂

      1. Thank you. Writing I can do but the technical stuff scares me… that’s why I put off writing a blog for so long, but finally decided to try and learn it by doing it!

  2. I thought Kerry’s honesty was brilliant. Doco represents huge brands so they have the budget to pay the likes of Google. I think it’s the companies that don’t have that money that are particularly keen on follow links because it’s the only way they have of boosting their search engine results. Interesting isn’t it. Whichever way you look at it, it’s still the brands with the money that will appear high in Google search results. They are just able to pay Google properly rather than using the follow links Google hates. The smaller players still want a slice of the action. I wonder how they will compete now. Food for thought.

  3. I loved it when she said this. It just put it all into perspective x

  4. I think Kerry was great for speaking up about this. x

  5. Good for Kerry for speaking up. I had a similar email conversation with a PR recently about this subject, he was saying that bloggers are not going to get many PR approaches now but I suggested that the reviews and posts done by bloggers reach a wide audience of very specific readers, so PRs need to bear that in mind and get creative with their ideas.
