Just a couple of hours

Earlier evenings, earlier mornings. I was awake this morning at 7.30, and unable to get back to sleep (unheard of recently, I assure you). So I got up all, on my own, in a quiet house and pondered what to do.

I could have pottered on twitter. I did read a few tweets and a couple of blogposts, which I enjoyed and RTed with appropriate comments. There was one from Jikan, Zen and the Art of Maze Making. And then there was The One that Broke the Camel’s Back from Mammy Woo. Thought provoking. Still haven’t worked out what to put in a comment.

But then I decided to get out and do something. So I shoved some washing in the machine, found my running gear and new camera, grabbed a couple of quid and headed for the beach, at a slow run. I only do slow running now – the midwife said I could run, but that I should take it steady, and make sure not to overheat, which actually this morning was a serious possibility.

Gorgeous day. Ran slowly down to the beach, then walked back up the hill to the nearest cafe, and bought myself lemon drizzle cake for breakfast. Lovely lady in the cafe threw in a cup of water for free 😀

So then all I had to do was find somewhere to sit to eat it.

Not difficult. So I enjoyed cake, and some time in the sun, and then I walked home, trying out the camera some more on the way. Not too impressed with the pictures so far I have to say, it really didn’t handle light conditions desperately well, but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it.

And when I got home, Smallest still wasn’t up. Though she managed to get up quite quickly, and was lovely throughout. *And* I’ve managed to put her to bed again tonight. So all I need to do is go and join her.

What do you reckon – was that a good use of a couple of hours to myself? How would you have spent them?

  1. Sounds a pretty good plan to me, Jax

    1. I think my only flaw was in not having enough money for a decent drink to go with the cake 😉

  2. sounds like a nice way to spend the morning 🙂

    1. It was lovely – gorgeous sunshine, lovely views, great cake!

  3. With those views and that cake, I think that was a perfect morning, especially as the sun was shining, although knowing me there would be no running involved for me hehe

    1. The running meant the cake held no guilt 😉

  4. Thank you so much for mentioning my post. What would you have done?
I am in deep awe that you decided to go for a run and not only that but that you live so close to a beach! That must be wonderful. I would have probably done something similar. Actually I lie. I blatantly would have got in the car and driven for coffee. Maybe next time I should run… Hmmm
My mouth is now watering, the cake looks sensational! I don’t know what’s up with me at the moment but all I can think about it eating and enjoying as much cake as possible. Lemon drizzle is one of my favourites and I hope you enjoyed every single bite!
I’ll be back to comment again if I ever do get around to running. I think I might! I may forgoe the beach though and run straight to greggs, does that count? Lol
    Great post x

    1. Greggs was my second choice for breakfast 🙂
I do find running helps. It gives me some time to myself, I can think as I do it, and it gives me some self respect that I’m not a complete slob, there are ten minutes a day I am active. The cake was worth it too.
I’m afraid I’d have eaten the waffle til the pain got too much. Or tried to run away with it. Other alternatives didn’t occur. I have been pondering on it since I read your post yesterday morning.

Oh that sounds lovely…It must be so nice to live near the beach for mornings like that. My son wakes up too early for me to do anything like that…well i could go at 4am but not sure it would be quite as nice then!

    1. No, I think 4 in the morning would still be a little dark for running…

  6. How wonderful just to be able to slip out of th ehouse in the morning while everyone is asleep….come the day!

    1. It may seem a long long way away, but it will come.

  7. read this with envy today, had a few really busy days, running around after other people, I crave a couple of hours to myself today. To go out before my son would involve leaving the house at 4.30am!
I do really appreciate the odd afternoon when I escape for a walk, end up in a cafe, thinking time and often take photos on my iphone.
lovely inspiring post – must do this more often.

    1. Eek. Fortunately my children do their being awake at the other end of the day. Which isn’t quite so hard – I’m really not so good at mornings.
I’m glad you are inspired – looking forward to hearing what you get up in your next batch of time off.

  8. Thanks for mentioning my blog post 🙂 Nom Nom @ the cake……beats the 2 packs of cheap and nasty crisps I just ate (Hushhhh dont tell anyone)
very envious of you living by the sea, I’d love to.

    1. The seaside was an accident. But we liked it so we stayed. You have to travel to your beach then?
And your blogpost was very worthy of mention!

  9. Brilliant post! Really uplifting! I’m so glad you’ve had some A+ time for you!

    1. Thank you – I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂
