It's Zumba time! Wii Game review.

My review copy of Zumba Fitness for the Wii arrived last week, when sadly I was in no fit state to try out anything that required me to stay awake. It’s been sitting waiting for a good moment for me to get it out, and as I finally managed over a mile running this morning, I thought tonight was the night.

There’s been a lot of talk on twitter about Zumba Gamethis week, and how it could form part of a fitness and weight loss routine. My own version of weight loss is to cut out beer and chocolate during the week, except on special occasions like having friends to stay 😉 , and eat what I want at weekends. It seems to be working – either that or the virus lost me another 3 lb last week. For fitness, I run – there’s a dailymile badge somewhere down there on the left that tells you how far since I started logging it.

But neither of those activities are doing anything about the flabby, post no three baby, belt of not-waist around my midriff. So I have been looking for other, targeted alternatives to add into the arsenal.

There’s a Zumba class at our local leisure centre. It’s so popular that it’s now replaced aerobics during one of the daily slots, as well as running twice in evening classes. But that would involve me coordinating with the other half and the various swimming classes and children’s activities and going out and making a complete fool of myself in front of other ppl. Not going to happen in a hurry I’m afraid. But a game for our new Wii sounded right up my street, and I was happy to give it a go.

One go so far, but I’m impressed. I did the basic Calypso tutorial, twice, to try to work out where to put my legs, then I did a single routine based on that. I scored a whole 509 points – I’ve no idea whether that’s good or not, but I’m guessing possibly not 😉 I did struggle to get the remote into the pocket on the supplied belt to begin with, but once I sorted that, I was well away. Oh, and it would have been an idea to clear a large area of floorspace, as you do a *lot* of moving around. It’s definitely active, and very definitely a whole body workout. Arms, legs, bottom – they are all on the go and waving around, some bits with more dignity than others. It’s quite good that the onscreen figures are pretty real too – not incredibly skinny women or any kind of fake figures.

I enjoyed it enough that I’ll try it again, possibly a little earlier in the day next time 😉 And I’ll let you know how I get on. If I’m feeling really brave, I might even set up a video camera… It’s already more popular with me than the Dirty Dancing exercise DVD I bought once upon a long ago, in the hope that I too would move like Baby. I didn’t. And they didn’t even use the routines from the film. What’s the point of that then? Think I’ll stick with Zumba. (At home. Where no one can see me tripping over my feet, or getting my arms mixed up. Never mind how well I wiggle my bottom.)

  1. I like the sound of it and I’d rather try it at home before attempting a class. Nice to hear the onscreen figures look ‘real’ too. Has to be a bonus.

    1. Am not sure I’ve described that desperately well. The onscreen figures are real dancers, just made into silhouettes by some funky process, but they are normal shaped ppl rather than ultra thin ultra fit dance types, does that make more sense?
