Home again

Set out for tip to drop books off, didn’t find it. Was passed on way to motorway by mysterious black bmw with frantically waving kids in back (hi Kirsty/ James.) Terrible journey up to school to pick up offspring, meant I was later than intended, though still much earlier than if I’d been working. If this month has done nothing else it’s reminded me that work is overrated, and I really ought to be considering an exit strategy.

Picked up kids and headed off the path for the first time in a month, lovely to be there, right up to the point where Big started screaming as I asked her to help tidy up. Next time she pulls that performance at someone’s house we are leaving – I came very very close to loading her up into the car last night, it’s just that it doesn’t seem very fair on Small. I’m going to talk to him about it though so that when it happens (and it will happen, that’s quite plain to see) he isn’t too surprised. Kids eventually bathed and into bed, talked to Big briefly about bibles, and I think we’ve settled on NIrV Gift and Award Bible as a suitable edition for the time being, although Jan’s also lent us a book of bible stories, fully illustrated, so she can get the gist of the story, then go to the bible for the fuller version. We’ve come away with a couple of books on loan about Christianity too, aimed at children and eminently suitable for answering the type of question that I’ve been being asked.

She read some more Ramona Quimby, Aged 8 (Ramona), that appears to be disappearing at about a chapter a night now (Jan searched out a few more of those too 🙂 ) and then they went to sleep without further fuss for once.

I got to spend a lovely evening with J and J (but not J, as he went to bed!) and we looked at pictures of their holiday and talked about religion amongst other things as usual. I even did a whole four more rows of Small’s cardigan, so now I’m on to the pattern chart bit. Stopped before I went any further as it looked rather intimidating.

Didn’t get up when the alarm went off this morning – it had taken me a while to get to sleep last night, and when the house was still quiet, it seemed rather a shame to get up and disturb anyone. So we ended up with a leisurely breakfast, and then the requisite tantrum before leaving, dropping off the boxes of books at the tip on our way. Big’s new friend was at school, so she was eventually happy – Small wanted to be inside, declaring it was a bit cold for him outside!!

I set off and indulged in some retail therapy at toys’r’us, as previously discussed, and then wandered over the moors looking for the bit we used to visit on Sat afternoons with my dad. Didn’t find it, but did have a trip to Haworth, but hadn’t figured school holidays in a tourist destination into my equation, so left there rapidly and wended my way back to Brighouse. Eventually read a book and ate a belated lunch on the side of the canal, which was quite pleasant.

Picked up children relatively early, Ailsa was showing a new family around. The parents are both deaf, and I was dismayed to realise I couldn’t remember any BSL, although when they were talking to each other it looked sort of familiar. Big said excuse me to the back of the mother, and was bemused to be ignored (did Tim find a smacks head smilie?) and then later in the car, asked me why they talked funny. At least she didn’t ask in front of them. I explained about them being deaf, and then my phone rang and we ignored it. She then asked how a deaf person would hear their mobile phone. Not sure she’s quite got the hang of this concept yet.

Tired children home, and surreal conversation from Small when he saw his new outdoor toy – he wanted to know if the helmet was in the box first, and then wasn’t sure about the handle. Big had thrown another tantrum, so I didn’t unpack her toy from the boot til after she’d gone upstairs (the tantrum was about being asked to carry the chocolate bread, which she couldn’t as her arms were too full – so I declared that mine were too full to unload the boot 😐 )

And now I’m being antisocial, as Tim’s transferred my profile from his laptop to the upstairs machine in preparation for me reaquainting myself with computers from tomorrow. So I’d better stop, and go downstairs and ignore him there 😉

  1. She seems to have got lost on the way.

  2. I believe mobile phones have proved very popular with the deaf community, for texting. The vibrate option makes them accessible too. I have also forgotten all the BSL I once knew (only level 1 certificate) and it does seem a shame. I can only remember random words – peas and chocolate spring to mind!

  3. lol, wondered if you’d seen us. i couldn’t tell through the sun visor. I shouted at James as I thought he’d looked like a lunatic beeping his horn at you.
Glad you had a relaxing time away, hugs for the tantrums.

  4. Hi Allie, yes mobile phones are fab for those purposes, meaning that you don’t have to use the talk and type services, and I knew someone would pick me up on that. However, I don’t think Big actually understands what deaf means, slightly disturbing as I’m half deaf and have been trying to get her to understand all her life!
Kirsty, it was the flashing hazards as he overtook that worried me, I thought I’d done something wrong. Then when he waved I saw M through the side window and it clicked 🙂

  5. You could try sneaking up on deafness by aiming for blindness first – try blindfolding her and then leading her around the house / garden. Maybe you could put some headphones on her and play music or something and then talk to her very quietly so she can’t hear you but can see your lips moving.
Sorry to hear about the tantrums – very wearing and boring I’m sure. Glad that J+J’s was as nice as ever.

  6. Glad you had a good visit with J and J and got some good pointers on Bibles and things for Big.
Sorry to hear Big is still so wobbly – could this be disrupted routine and vaguely knowing something is not right with you?
