As I said earlier, I’ve been approached by a number of charities in the run up to IWD. The first campaign I’m highlighting is ActionAid’s Getting Lippy. There’s a website. There are videos. There are women from around the world telling you their stories. Some of them will resonate with you, and I hope you will want to send messages of support, messages that will mean something to those women when they stand up for their rights in places where they have none.
I wanted to choose one video to share with you tonight, but I was overwhelmed by the range of stories. I couldn’t find the words, couldn’t think how to choose one person to highlight over the others. How do I decide which person is most important, who needs the most support, who I should speak for and too? I don’t know. Tonight, when I am tired from an ordinary day, I don’t have the strength to listen to all these extraordinary ordinary stories of lives so very different to mine.
I will come back to this, I will be blogging further, but for now, I’d like to ask you all to take a look at the site and have a think. What does IWD mean to you? Is it something you’ll get involved with? Or is it irrelevant in this country, at this time? Answers in the usual place please, or on your own blogs – and send me the links!
