Tomorrow (ok today now that it’s taken me so long to blog!) would be Big’s first legally required day at school, were she going to school. She isn’t, before you start worrying that I’m about to post her! 😉
So today we sat down and discussed home education. Small didn’t sit down, he toddled in and out, but the rest of us did. We explained about the law about offering a suitable education (and digressed into something about offering bananas which confused me rather) and talked about what sorts of things Big might like to learn, in terms of what kind of things we’ve already been doing.
Big chose some goals that she would like to have completed by the time she is 6:
read books alone,
finish the yr 1 Exeter maths,
learn more history,
make a milly molly mandy house complete with thatch,
and learn how to pay for things herself with money.
She’d also like to learn to drive a car, but I keep explaining that that isn’t terribly feasible just yet. 😉
She wants to go on doing everything else that we do as well – particularly computer stuff (but not children’s things, real things like making (ie designing) blogs like mummy and daddy), and art and craft and cooking, so sounds like I’m going to be kept out of mischief.
And we’re going to have another meeting in a month. Blogged with her express permission – something I will continue to do when the post is more about her and her learning than it is about me and my hair tearing iyswim.

That’s great. There was a driving school for under sevens at Butlins, you know …
It must be nice to have an organised, focused child! Maybe we just have the drifting gene in our family! No I’m being unfair, my lot do focus on things. Just sometimes not very academic things!
Exciting times. I wish we could have those early days again. We have a rule about permission to blog as well. So the other night, when I was asking about her test results, she was happy for that to go up till I got an answer, and then taken down, and she gets right of veto on stuff about her before I post it. Unlike Bob 🙂
I think thats a really good idea. When do you think I should implement it with SB??
I have had a paranoid look back over blogs, and I dont think I have said anything that in the future she feels has infringed privacy, but who knows??
Like bigs goal chosing – autonomous and organised, ideal combination
wonderful 🙂
Next time you’re passing Portsmouth, my m-i-l would be delighted to show you round her MMM house, complete with thatch and period furnishings and decoration…
Wow what a great response from Big! Well done to you all for making it happen.
