A little package arrived this morning, containing Harry Potter Years 1-5 Box Set. The children were very excited. We had a look at the first film, hoping to plan a film evening, and discovered it’s 147 minutes long, so the evening has had to start earlier than I’d hoped really!
Earlier in the day we didn’t achieve very much – I seem to have rather tired the children out. They lego-ed for a while, then we lunched, then I took them into town to tour the charity shops, looking for HP book 4 for Big. She’s very into it now 🙂 We could only find bk 4 full price in the remainder shop (which seemed particularly ironic, there were about 7 books that apparently they have to order in particularly, and they included Harry Potter) although we picked up Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) for Small for when he finishes Book 1. Just as well he’s got a way to go as he ended up having the book confiscated when he started hitting ppl with it 🙁 I’ve told him he can have it back when he gets through a day without hitting anyone, which resulted in extremely loud wailing most of the way home. Jolly good.
Also got Big Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5), (hm, should have ordered it from Amazon, the hardback copy we got was 3.99, could have got it there for 2.76. Did mean we had a good conversation about charity and how it works though as we compared prices.) This meant we now had a real urgency for book 4, so rang Tim to check whether the library had it. They did, so we dropped Small off at home, picked up her library card, and went off the library.
They had rather more than book 4! There were 10 copies of various Harry Potter books on the children’s shelves, another on a table for no apparent reason, and a couple of adult cover copies in the teenager section. Guess it’s still fairly popular then 😆 Headed home with the Goblet of Fire and then settled ourselves down to watch the Philosopher’s Stone as a family.
Rather enjoying it so far, though amazed at how much they’ve had to cut from the book. I’m guessing later books must get absolutely massacred, although I have heard that they are filming the last one in two instalments in order to fit more of it in. Be a while before we get to that point I suspect though.
Children are currently bathing before we watch the second half – they’ve just eaten their quickest tea ever. And I suspect we’ll be doing it all over again with Chamber of Secrets tomorrow night.
Be a pause for a while then, as he won’t have heard book 3 – I’m hoping the ordered copy arrives at the library before our Melrose drive. Once we’ve heard it or read it, then we can see it.
Got to say, I’m still slightly stunned at the way Big has taken to these. I don’t really get it – they are fun, but I can think of other books that have held me much better, both as child and adult. Still, I’m not really going to argue with anything much that demands this level of reading – am still hoping that Small will pick up book one again and get cracking!
