Day the third, in which we finally crack the orthodontic wax thing.

Another long day today. In hindsight, having a hectic week when Big was having her braces fitted wasn’t a good plan, but several things snuck themselves in there independently, and there wasn’t anything that could easily give.

So today we got up, had a tantrum or two, and only left the house a half hour late to go to a town a few miles up the road, look for shoes and meet up with a local(ish) mummy blogger, Laura from The Mummy Life. The shoe part of the expedition was sadly unsuccessful, mainly because I didn’t do my research properly, and we wasted time in Next when we could have been in Priceless shoes.

The lunch bit was a great success though. The kids were overjoyed as we visited McDs – I’d thought this one through and the burgers in buns are plenty soft enough for Big atm. Smallest adores fishfingers, fruit and carrots, so I hid my chips from her and she shared a fruit bag and carrot sticks with Small and we got plenty of time to chat. Luke is a really cheerful small person – absolutely adoreable smiles and it was just lovely to chat to someone who I sort of know and don’t know – took me back to the early days of the blogring.

After lunch, just time to buy *more* calpol melts as we’d managed to leave the house without them again, before dashing off to another appt. Why oh why do so many ppl keep you waiting for these things? I’d specifically arranged a time that would allow us to get to Big’s rookie, and we were kept waiting long enough that by the time we’d stopped after to change the disastrously wet nappy, we were v late for her to swim 🙁 She dealt with it well though, so only me sitting fuming in the leisure centre cafe once again. I *hate* sitting there. I’m getting really really close to talking to some of the oh so involved parents who totally ignore their children behaving like hoodlums. What is that about? Rant, fume, rage.

Home, and Small earned back some more screen time by rattling through a second maths SAT paper. He’s now, without doing the mental maths section, got enough points to get a level 4 at KS2. Not bad considering he’s 7. He really enjoys doing them too – once he got over the idea that he needed to get everything right, he cheerfully bashed away and it means I know what he does know and what he doesn’t. He was very impressed with himself.

Lots of tears from Big this evening though 🙁 The wire at the back of her mouth had cut into her cheek, so she dripped through tea as she couldn’t open her mouth enough to eat properly. All saved when Tim headed off with her and assisted with the orthodontic wax application. Turned out that she hadn’t been applying nearly enough, oh, and having an extra hand would make it all very much easier. Hopefully she’ll suss that with practice though!

So, a long day. And tomorrow is shaping up similarly, as is Saturday, and apparently Sunday is thinking day, though I’m not quite sure when we get around to me having a few hours off. Monday perhaps?

  1. I wouldn’t recommend Priceless. We have bought the occasional pair of shoes from there (such as black school shoes for once a week GB which were then handed down to Ernest for BB!), but their stuff is *really* cheaply-made and not very nice.

    1. I shall feel a bit better for not making it round there then, thank you 🙂

  2. glad the dental wax has been sussed! Poor Big though, hope her mouth heals fast

  3. She really will be amazed the difference a couple of weeks make. Hannah wept through meals for the first 10 days or so, and I thought we were looking at three years of nothing but sandwich rolls and soup, but corn on the cob is now the only thing she can’t eat. She slices apples, carrots etc up rather than bite into them, and breaks french bread into pieces rather than biting, but its not really an issue now. And I’m amazed at how tough her mouth seems to be!
