data protection irritation.

Tonight I made the mistake of trying to do two things at once in a phonecall to a financial institution. I said I wanted to make a withdrawal and update my address details – at which point I was informed that I couldn’t make any withdrawal because I’d moved. Huh? If I hadn’t told them, they wouldn’t have known and they’d have sent me my money. As it is, I’ve got to write to them to confirm the updated address (which she would at least record over the phone) and request my money back. Grr.

Yesterday I made the mistake of trying to deal with another financial institution over the phone. I had closed the account, and so not updated the address, but somewhere along the way, despite me paying them over the phone in February, they decided I owed them £6, which now, with late charges has become £30 (I think not  ) and when I pointed out that I had paid them what they had requested over the phone suddenly the late charges were wiped out, leaving only the £6 (no, I’ve no idea what that is for, I don’t use this card, which was why I was cancelling it!) but I thought I might as well pay it, and she put me on hold and left me there! After 10 minutes (which I assure you I will be charging them for) I hung up, and they too are on my list of ppl to write to and complain.

Honestly. And as for the numpty who rang work, claimed his name was Clark (yeah, right) and that he wanted to ask me some questions about which brand of frozen potato products we use but this wasn’t market research – well, I hung up on him.

What is with these ppl? I’m reserving a special place of irritation for our new doctors as well. I rang them up today to confirm the appt they’d sent out to us and cancel the one I’d made originally (which was at an inconvenient time, but was apparently the best they could do, right up til the point that they wrote inviting Small in earlier to be perforated) and was told they’d already cancelled it. I’m not sure I like doctors who aren’t consistent – I’d tried to get his appt in quickly and was given one nearly 3 weeks away as the first they had, they then sent me one a week earlier without any explanation. I suspect this was as a result of receiving his file from the original doctor and discovering precisely how overdue his pre-school booster was. Apparently he didn’t mind the injections, but objected to the bleeding. As you would. But he’s got a plaster on with pictures, and I now feel markedly less guilty about the whole thing (no, I’m not against vaxing, if you wish to be against vaxing that is completely your decision (but I don’t want to be told I’m wrong, I’ve done my research and I’m happy with it thank you)). There’s chickenpox going round as well atm, wonder if he’s going to succumb to that?

Odd day with the weather today. We watered plants at school under a very dark sky, and just about the time we’d finished and we were all going inside to warm up, the sun came blazing out again. We’re waiting for the toad rain – some time in the next couple of weeks it will rain and the grounds and car park will fill up with little tiny toadlets going somewhere or other, we don’t quite know. They are suicidal – you can’t walk across the paths when it’s raining as there’s nowhere to put your feet that isn’t already inhabited by amphibians, but there’s nothing we can do about it. I’d hope they would clear out some of the vegetable eating pests, but I don’t think toads eat snails do they?

  1. Your first two issues aren’t technically data protection issues. These are issues with the banks internal procedures which are designed to safeguard your account. The marketing issue technically is a data protection issue as they are processing your personal data. You can have your name and number put on the do not call list and you can request directly to the company that they not market to you. Their claim that the call is not marketing is spurious. The organization will occassionally call customers at home re service issues which is not marketing (e.g., no one is going to call you and ask you what type of financial services you ask for).

  2. Hi Michael. I’m very aware that these aren’t data protection issues, but that was what the person on the phone told me was the reason she had to do things the way she was doing them – she said it was data protection. I should have put that in the post 🙂

  3. Businesses will often use data protection as an excuse, either on purpose or out of ignorance. To be fair, it is a difficult area of the law- just take a look at the Information Commissioner’s website to see all the guidance that has been issued to try and help persons navigate the DPA.
