Creative every day.

I am scared of creativity.

The blank page worries me. Words I can usually find, but illustration, pictures, something new I make myself, way more difficult.

But I know that when I have been creative I feel better. I feel challenged and fulfilled. Even a doodle is a good thing, like yesterday’s effort.

So I’m going to try being creative daily. That might be a doodle. It might be my own crochet pattern. It could be a poem, a model, a piece of art or even a meal that steps outside my standard menu. Some of it will be documented and shared. Some won’t. I’ll try not to let the failures get me down, and that will no doubt include days when I’ve nothing within me to create.

I also need to find a way to not become obsessional about the attempt. I’m not sure how to do that. Already I’m stressing that I’ve failed at exercising every day in January (janathon?) Even though I never signed up or declared that I was taking part in that challenge. This may be my biggest step this year. In search of balance.

  1. you’ll probably find that once you get into the habit of daily creativity it will come more and more easily.

    1. Certainly hope so.

  2. I have a notebook made from brown wrapping paper and i write a few thoughts about the day/life and doodle/sketch something everyday now, it took me a while to get into it but its something that i do for me, because its private and not a blog i’ve got better about my doodles ‘not being perfect’. It also took me a while to change my own thinking about creativity, and realising that something as simple as changing a receipe slightly, or solving a problem in an usual way is just as creative as painting. have you looked at Danny Gregory (everyday matters) or Creative EveryDay challenge? might find something to inspire you on the tough days.

    1. Good tips there. I think I do need a private place for creativity, maybe just sharing some aspects of it as I get into the flow more. Will look those things up, thanks.

  3. I love this post and wish you all the best with the process (and with the journey!) . Do you know Julia Cameron and her Morning Papers idea? It’s a really good ‘door-opener’ into things. 🙂

    1. I’m not sure I do know that one, I’ll look it up. Thanks.

  4. I so get where you’re coming from with this! However much I do – and with three books done now you’d think I had a bit of faith – I’m always terrified I’ll never be able to do it again! At this time of the year, when we’re trying to crank up again after Christmas, I usually dip into some creative books for a bit of help and support – as being creative always has to come from ourselves and as such can be exhausting. Two I found that gave confidence and lift are ‘The Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron and recently ‘The Icarus Deception’ by Seth Godin. They really help you on your way. All best. x

    1. Thanks Ross. I did get an Amazon voucher, maybe I should treat myself.

  5. Good luck with being creative, I am awful with drawing or painting or general creative pursuits, words I’m ok with but everything else leaves me stumped. I wish I was brave enough to take on a challenge like yours.

    1. I need to get a little more courageous with the drawing that’s for sure.
