Buy Nothing Day | Saturday November 29th 2008

Saturday November 29h 2008 is Buy Nothing Day, It’s a day where you challenge yourself to switch off from shopping and tune into life.

The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from consumerism and live without shopping. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending

I very often have buy nothing days. In fact, today is unusual in that I stopped at the petrol station on the way home and bought £10 of fuel. That’s pretty much my spending for the week – I think we shopped twice last week while Tim was away but both times it was mainly food. Although we did buy some tat while in Leeds now I think of it.

Overall, being at work between 8 and 6 does rather limit one’s spending opportunities. Although I do owe another member of staff for the stuff she bought for a third’s birthday the other week. And there’s another birthday coming up soon. Hohum.

I’ve got presents to make and I’ve barely started thinking about Christmas – my focus is on getting through to the end of term. I suppose I really ought to have a think about it – Big has been muttering about wanting a sewing machine, which would at least be useful to have about. Am wondering whether we should have it between us as a family present though, not sure how I’d handle not being able to sew stuff as it would be her machine 😉 Something like this, The Best of Sewing Machine Fun for Kids, might be good to go with it, although tbh, we’ve been using Sew Many Bags Sew Little Time: Over 30 Simply Stylish Bags and Accessories at school, and it hasn’t been beyond her at all.

Hm. I’m looking forward to having time and energy for this sort of thing again. Maybe I’ll finally get Nic to give me that peglooming lesson and get the pegloom out of it’s shrink wrap for the first time. I’ve only had it about three years 🙁 Small is ready for a change as well, he was unhappy at going to school today as apparently it’s too loud for him to think. As we are regularly told that it is substantially quieter than mainstream, I dread to think how he would manage there. I have absolutely no idea what to get him for Christmas – I suppose if I managed to get access to a sewing machine before then, and sewed up the batman costume that I bought material for a year ago, that might work!
