I’d promised Big earlier in the week that we could do her baking on Saturday as whenever it was we’d wanted to do it we didn’t have the three hours necessary for it to cool in the fridge. (She wanted to make pink fairy fudge from the Fairy cooking book from Usborne Sparkly Activity Pack – Set of 6 Books (Titles Include: Princess Things to Make and Do, How to Draw Fairies and Mermaids …..))
So yesterday we started with more embroidery for her while I finished off the blue monster face that he’d wanted embroidering on his handkerchief. Then he wanted to do some sewing, so I pulled out one of the plastic canvas kits I’d got from poundland and we did a giraffe’s leg together. That took us up to midmorning and a shower for me, then we started the fudge by doing the hot bits. Big washed up after we’d set it to cool.
Lunchtime, then I baked chocolate brownies with Small from a Greens kit that had been sitting around for ages. Which took me up to needing a lie down – I’m not sleeping well atm, don’t know why, but I’m doing the really irritating wake really early and several times thing, which means I’m getting up on a morning feeling not that much different from when I go to bed. Told Big to wake me at 16.00 when it would be time to get her fudge out of the fridge – she didn’t come up til half past, and it took me another 25 minutes to get my head off the pillow. Still, we managed to roll out fudge and she cut it into snowflake shapes as those are the only cutters we have.
Think the day deteriorated some time after that – probably round about the time we asked her to wash up the rolling pin. “You want me to wash up 3 times!” well, yes, if you’ve managed to split the washing up from your cooking into three sections. Oh well. I think I’ve missed out the bit where they played outside for a while with remote control cars, and the bit where they did puters or watched dvds. Seemed to be a very busy day though – cooking and embroidery are not what I’d call my favourite activities, so to spend the entire day being encouraging while in the kitchen or sewing had really taken it out of me.
Oh, and yes, the Guatemalan dolls did work, and she used them again last night. Result!
So they went to bed, and we had fish and chips, then I did some hemp jewellry making while we listened to Saturday Live on listen again following a twitter recommendation about a section on home education. Have to say that I didn’t think that much of it, it was very much the same as all these reports – we’re normal, we’re autonomous, we’re happy. And when did school become synonymous with standard state school. I get tired of defending the montessori school that the kids go to which couldn’t be more different to a standard state if that was its sole purpose. Although why I think of it as defending I don’t know. Simply because I’d like ppl to realise that there are more alternatives and other ways the whole education thing can be done. Thought the headmaster chap on the radio was interesting, but overall, was bored by it all.
Then I finished my beer and went to bed.
I’ve really enjoyed a week off – I’ve tried to cram in lots of activities with the whole family that various ppl chose and I think we did manage to tick those boxes pretty comprehensively. Haven’t got very far through the paperwork and really do need to get a grip on that, but overall I think it’s time to have another bash at working out what I want to be when I grow up. Not that I’m planning on growing up any time soon, but I think where we are right now isn’t really suiting any of us.
(I may be back later with pictures, as I used the camera quite a bit yesterday).
