BBC NEWS | UK | Weak teachers ‘put off pupils’
Ms Gilbert said teaching rated as “satisfactory” was not good enough, especially in deprived areas.
Definition of the word satisfactory from the OED: “4. a. Sufficient for the needs of the case, adequate.”
Personally, I would have said that sufficient for the needs of the case should be described really as good enough.
(I’m not entering the argument as to whether is is acceptable for teachers to be ‘only’ satisfactory or whether they should be aiming higher, merely commenting on the complete lack of anything resembling sense in this particular report.)
