BBC NEWS | Politics | Olympics audio surveillance row

“As you walk down the street you expect to be able to have a private conversation,” he said.

“If you can’t guarantee that – and here is someone speaking who has been pretty tough in terms of what should be available to protect society – I believe we have slipped over the edge.”

For the first time ever, I’m rooting for David Blunkett.

  1. scary idea – rooting for blunkett! you seen this one? http://www.guardian.co.uk/crime/article/0,,1957831,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=1

  2. Yes. I was rather lost for words.

  3. “What we are seeing in effect is a rise in the politicisation of middle England” – isn’t that a good thing then? I thought politicians bemoaned voter apathy towards the political? Can’t have it all ways.

  4. I’ve tried and failed to come up with a link for a system I read about to supposedly make aeroplanes more secure. It was listening to all the passengers’ speech while they were sat in their seat, and would be able to tell if someone was praying in Arabic as this is what a suicide bomber or other terrorist might do just before trying to kill people or take over the plane. This is obviously part of the wider new offence: Travelling while Asian. 🙁

  5. I think what they are saying Kath, is it’s a rise in the number of voters complaining about what politicians are doing, which is not to be approved of 😉 They’d love for us all to just trot out to vote and then say nothing for another 5 years!
Bob, bleargh. As someone who is scared of flying would never pray because of their fear would they?

  6. “Travelling while Asian” I like that Bob, I reckon you could get a job working for Our Leader just dreaming up new crimes.
    How about…. umm…
    “Looking slightly foreign.”
    “Being not one of us”
Crimes against humanity? – “Being Welsh”
And that old Met Police standby “driving a BMW while black”

  7. Oh yes.
    Mustn’t forget.
“Sitting on a tube train while Brazilian”

  8. I think Not the Nine O’clock News did this sketch already 😉
Did you see the story last week about the latest 6 Muslim men removed from an American plane? http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/22/us/22muslim.html
I love, and agree with, this quote I read about it on a blog:
“I know it’ll never happen, but there really, really needs to be policy supported by all the airlines that if you’re scared of another passenger, you can get off the plane and get a refund, but that no one else will be removed because you’re an ignorant chickenshit.”

  9. …. mind you, if they extend this policy I could end up with a private jet…..
oooooh, he scares me [OFF}, he scares me [OFF}, he scares me [OFF}, he scares me [OFF}, she scares me [OFF}, he scares me [OFF} , he scares me [OFF}, he scares me [OFF}, he scares me [OFF},, she scares me [OFF}, she scares me [OFF},
Hmm, let’s go clear out first class now….

  10. Tim – I hope you were using copy and paste a lot there, otherwise you’ve made the same brackets mismatch mistake 11 times. Obviously you’re not a LISP programmer :). Where’s the IDE for blog comments, that auto-completes brackets etc?

  11. Lol, my dad drummed into me many years ago to type BOTH brackets in one go and then go back and fill in the middle!

  12. Spot the geek – I do that with quotes, brackets, single quotes…
