BBC NEWS | Education | Merger may see 3,500-pupil school

Parents and pupils are to be consulted over plans to merge three schools into one academy for 3,500 pupils.

On Tuesday councillors approved a period of consultation over what would be England’s largest school.

The merging of Greenwood Dale School, Elliott Durham School and Jesse Boot Primary in Nottingham would offer education for three to 19-year-olds.

Nasty idea. Blows the mind given that I do not believe there is any research supporting the idea that education is better in such an environment, and I rather think there is research to support the reverse. Think I’ll do a bit of a search later.

  1. I went from a ‘very good’ private 4 yr high school with a population of just under 500, to a ‘very good’ state HS with just over 2000 students. I have to say hands down-the bigger state school was better–and I never felt like I was in a huge institution.
The class sizes were actually smaller, and they offered 3x the amount of courses. They were better able to help the gifted, as well as the disabled, and the troublesome. All the core classes were taught on three different levels–and because of the diversity of the school, no one really knew what level you were in, unless they knew you. They also had a great vocational section-where most of the kids that took those were pretty much guaranteed a job in their trade.
Not that I’m in favour of any school-but it really wasn’t all that bad.
