BBC NEWS | Business | Law ‘will ban age discrimination’

There is also a plan to outlaw secrecy clauses in employment contracts designed to prevent staff from discussing their salaries.

Figures from the Equal Opportunities Commission in 2004 suggested a quarter of companies used such clauses.

I think they should go further and require companies to disclose salaries – I know that there are completely bizarre discrepancies all over the place, and while you might have a bit of unhappiness when it was first all disclosed, it would be really difficult to end up with gender related pay inequalities afterwards.

  1. I was wondering how long it would be before it was illegal to stop an under 17 year old from driving on the basis that it is discriminating against their age to make them wait till they were 17.

  2. …and what about all the five year olds who want to be firemen/women?

  3. I was so surprised to learn that the national minimum wage is based on people’s ages–isn’t that just age discriminate to the young? I think it’s unfair they get paid less to do the same job–just because they may not be a home-owner, etc.. is no reason to pay them less to do the same job. That’s like saying a mom of 5 should get paid more than a mom of 2.

  4. I think in most cases, a mother of five would get paid more than a mother of two.
