Armada, new world and Shakespeare: history etc

Today was the first of our monthly history meets that we’ve made for ages it seemed. In The Story of the World: Middle Ages from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of the Renaissance v. 2: History for the Classical Child (Story of the World: History for the Classical Child)we’ve reached the tudor explorers, the Spanish armada and Shakespeare, so today those were our inspiration.

I took armada related activities. Sailor’s diaries, maps to fill in with the route, Elizabeth’s speech with words missing. (That last one proved quite challenging.) Katy had some similar bits that were less wordy and more pictorial, so we’d a good range for all ages and abilities.

Zoe brought clay and beads to make a salamander charm against fire, a cut out and stick together globe theatre, and potatoes and veg paella for lunch.

Helen started with new world painting, which proved very popular with everyone.

We didn’t get as far as making Shakespeare puppets to reenact a play, but I did discover that Big knows a lot about midsummer night’s dream.

A lovely day all round, thanks everyone.
