But could I get Big to go outside? nope, she just wanted to play on the computer (her mother’s daughter it would appear 😉 ) Today it was the turn of Jump Ahead Year 1 – terribly schooly, even set in a school, but she seemed to really enjoy it. She was thrilled when she scored enough points to get a milk bottle cap? Nope, I’ve no idea either. I think quite a lot of the maths stuff was rather beyond what she’s used to – she can add perfectly well when she uses her fingers, but this had two numbers like 23 and 45 laid out above each other, and we went through it five times (it presents five sums in the game) and she still didn’t get it. At which point she was getting so worked up that I went on strike and refused to assist any further. Still, I suspect that she’ll get the hang of it in time, although I definitely need to figure out a way to restrict how long she’ll spend on a given game.

Small was a bit more of a pain today, although the last problem was totally my one fault. I should have known better than to let him leg it without a nappy – obviously he headed for the one carpeted room in the house, and just as obviously, he needed more than a wee….yeuch. Horrid offspring.

I’ve done a tiny bit of reading for myself (David Brin’s Earth, for anyone interested), and I’m doing wonderful work avoidance. But right after I do this, I’m going to start the laptop and do half an hours paying work (I do get a little of it now and then) and then I’m going to bed. Honest.

  1. Downwards adding hasn’t made it into Fran’s list of achievements yet that is for sure. And as for poos on the carpet, we lost £150 of deposit thanks to Ammi doing that!

  4. I’m sure there are loads of tips out there on how to teach tens and units …. I did a fairly Montessori approach with Poppy, don’t remember what I did with Tilda, lol! I made card equivalents of the monte ‘golden beads’ (of course, you could always use cuisenaire rods too if you have them?), and also the overlapping cards. The ‘Stamp game’ on http://www.our-montessori.com/home.html shows how to do addition, but goes up to thousands, which you might not want just yet …..
    And, out of interest, why restrict how long she spends playing the games?

    I let this lot play if they want to – it goes in fits and starts, loads of PC time for a while then nothing for ages and its pretty much always been useful.

  6. My boys get 20 mins a day if it’s simply games (like the Playstation or a car chasey type of thing), but if it’s Education stuff they’re doing I allow a bit more lee-way. However, they are still restricted because there’s two of them (& sometimes Boo & Phoebe too these days) vieing for a turn, so max of about 35 mins anyway – and by then they are finding the ‘fun’ things in the programs so that counts as playing anyhow!! I’m a hard Mummy!!
    On the T & U front – Jacob (end of Yr 2) has only just done vertical addition, so I shouldn’t be too worried just yet. I was tempted to do it before now but was glad we waited til it came up in Singapore Maths (2A) because he got it really quickly and then went straight into carrying and borrowing for subtraction with no trouble at all. So chill!! Just tell her to do another bit of the program. 🙂

  7. I want to restrict how long she spends on the games, because it seems if she spends too long just sitting staring, she ends up throwing a wobbly as and when she gets stuck. Three times today 🙁 I’d rather that she enjoyed the time on the computer without ending up in tears!
