And so it starts

Have just answered the door (they knocked on it several times and rang the doorbell three times) to three young boys in masks. I told them to go away, and watched them off the drive.

I am hyperventilating slightly, and very, very glad that Big is at Grandma’s just now. This isn’t on. I fully understand that some communities do this as a sort of community activity, but we don’t, no one comes to our door at any other time in the year (tell a lie, we get the occasional incompetent carol singer) and I don’t see why I should spend the next 10 days or so keeping my children away from the front door as soon as it starts to get to dusk.

Bugger.

  1. Cna you just put a sign up on your door saying that trick or treaters are not welcome due to a nervy small child? You could even leave a few treats on the doorstep!

  2. I have considered putting a sign on the gate and shutting it, but I’m worried that will actually tempt them to retaliate. It isn’t the nervy small child that’s the only problem here 🙁

  3. Alternatively you could catch one, string it up and leave the rotting body hanging from the porch!

  4. Now *that* appeals!

They start early here too, although not this early. I worry about retaliations too. We’ve just come back from shopping and had three young lads standing in the road as we came round the corner. They refused to move (!) until hubby wound down the window and offered to move them (although his language wasn’t that polite). Once they’d got a good look at him I think they decided the better option was moving ;0) I hate being out this time of year – the fireworks have started already and I had one thrown at me (only narrowly missed) a couple of years ago, which really shook me. I’m just praying the TRA comes back postive and we can move!!!!! I’m with Merry on the stringing the body up (way things are ATM).

  6. There seems to be a general rule around here that showing your front light or anything halloweeny is an invitation but a darkened front of house means to keep away. Which seems fair enough really.

  7. I have been known to open the door and just let it swing closed!!! I do something even worse now – give them a Jesus sticker – I don’t think they will be back this year.

  8. (((Hugs))) Jax. That is one positive about living here, no one can bloomin find us! Downside is that even the postman has difficulty…

  9. yeah, sounds horrid Jax. Plus they are over a week too early! I have to say that nevermind my feelings on halloween or not, I detest trick-or-treating. Hope you don’t have too much more trouble.

  10. It is so sad we have to live in fear of the very people who’ll be peoples’ dads one day … but we do seem to have to … even in sleepy Buxton! We seem to have the same American lighting policy here abouts. I tend to stun them with my syrupy sweet solicitation for their wellbeing (usually enough to wierd them out and send them off … they don’t seem to know where to put that!) … I’m very tempted by Karen’s tactic! Sorry to hear about Dottyspot’s situation. We went thro very similar stuff when we lived in Brum. The people are lovely there, but there does seem to be a blip in youth culture. I really wonder what the next generations will be like. Will they really be worse than ours? Or is it just teething?

  11. I like the Jesus sticker idea, get any spares Karen. Are they removable, though? Best if they weren’t I suppose. Given that this is an ex steel/coal village, maybe I could give them all vote conservative stickers. Gay Pride?

  12. hmm I must be the minority. We loved Halloween last year with the kids running to the door to see all the others dressed up. I’ve even toyed with the idea of taking Marcus and Alex round the neighbours (just a few doors) but James isn’t so keen.
I do understand it’s not fun with older boys, we had an egg thrown at the house one time (but it might have been carol singers) and we don’t live in a fantastic area and it can be a bit frightening.
*hugs* though, I know it was really bad last year

  13. Jax, that fix of yours isn’t working! 😉

  14. I think the problem is T & T has been half-imported…..the kids were in Canada last Halloween and had a fanatastic evening. The whole community gets into it, not just kids after freebies. The kids etc all appear to make an enormous effort with the focus not on doing nasty things, I guess ‘cos nearly everyone gives a treat. It just doesn’t really work here.

  15. There is a ‘friendly comments’ plugin that sounds good. It automatically approves comments from friends but not anyone else.

  16. The other interesting thing about when they went trick or treating in Canada was that, in my aunt’s community at least (I wonder whether it’s the same elsewhere?), there’s a general agreement not to wear masks.

  17. Do you not think that having a dead trick or treater hanging up outside the house might be seen as a symbol of Halloween and attract more?

  18. I suppose its possible but it might keep all but the very strong stomached away!
