From Bob Bug and friends to The Caper of the Crown Jewels: England (Secret Agent Jack Stalwart) in two and a half months. Small started his first chapter book, The Finger-Eater (Sprinters), on Thursday. He read a chapter then, and a chapter today. Then the book ppl order arrived, including a gift bag set of Jack Stalwart books. I had no idea that this was so exciting, but apparently it was, and he sat down and finished the three remaining chapters of the finger eater, in about an hour, and then chose himself the Jack Stalwart mentioned above. I think we have to declare the boy a reader, in a very short space of time.

Despite this, he’s just burst into tears and needed hugs as he came down and declared “either my ben 10 watch or my magazine” and then apparently expected me to answer a question. First of all I thought I’d misheard him, so I asked him to say it again, then I had to explain what a question is and how I needed him to tell me what he was asking before I could help him answer it. That trauma took another 5 minutes to resolve, but I think we’ve cracked it now.

It’s never straightforward is it?

Traumas and excitement at school when a parent ran back in after taking her son out, and thrust him into my arms, shouting that he’d trapped his finger in the door. She was in pieces and he was screaming, just as well I had that paediatric first aid course then! I had him with his finger under the tap (quickest way to cool it down) while asking for another member of staff to fetch ice, and we had it sorted quite quickly, from looking nothing like a finger to just slightly squished in about 10 minutes. Not sure how long it will be before he talks to me again though, as he really didn’t like any of the treatment, given that I’d taken him out of mummy’s arms to do it! Poor little chap.

Big is not having much fun atm either. I think she’s thinking in terms of a countdown to leaving, and her friends don’t seem to have noticed that half of the equation, even though they know that I’m going. They are all upset about that, but not so much about her, which understandably is hurting her feelings a lot. Then she’s taking it out on me, which is probably not endearing her to them any, so it’s all a bit of a vicious circle.

Right, must go and see where Small has got to. With this reading lark going on he’s now extremely distractable, and while he’s supposed to have gone to get ready for bed, if he’s passed anything with print on he’s probably still there reading it. That’s my boy 😀

  1. That’s so excellent! Reading! Ah, I long for the day….sigh. Mine has no interest, even though I keep telling him that part of the scientific process is documentation.

  2. ooop, sorry Big is having a hard time of it right now. Girls do that – take it out on their mothers. Just part of the job description, it’s the one which reads, “from time to time swallow acid whilst smiling cheerfully.” It’s right under the part about wiping bums for years on end.

  3. Wow, well done Small! That’s fantastic progress. We did Bob Bug as well. I don’t think Jess was terribly keen on it as she said that it didn’t sound like real sentences. Those Springer books look rather good though.
