Secondary Years Home Education Activities and Ideas
Secondary Years Home Education UK: Supporting Independence and Deeper Learning from Ages 12-18
Home education during the secondary years (ages 12-18) shifts beautifully toward greater independence, deeper dives into passion areas, and preparation for whatever comes next. Having guided two of my children to adulthood through home education, I’ve learned that teenagers thrive when given meaningful responsibility for their learning alongside thoughtful mentorship.
This collection brings together practical resources for supporting exam options (if chosen), project-based learning, community involvement, and the sometimes tricky balance of accountability and autonomy. You’ll find ideas to inspire your teen’s education journey whether they are neurodivergent, coming to home ed after school experiences, or has always learned at home, as well as resources to support your changing role as their learning facilitator (rather than their director).
