be sure to take your carrying bag, map, binoculars and little brother.
Don’t forget your imagination. There could be fairies in the wood, but you’ll have to be quiet or you might scare them away. Watch for the signs.
There could be gossamer hammocks hung from old flowers.
Maybe they’ve grown little fairy steps to help them climb up logs.
Perhaps, if you look very very carefully, you’ll even find their front doors.
The fairies themselves? I think they hid in the sunlight. I’m sure I heard a tiny giggle as we tried to catch falling autumn leaves.
The woods are a fabulous place to play, explore and learn. Books we’re reading to enhance our enjoyment include the wonderful Tree by Britta Teekentrup, and Imelda and the Goblin King. (Pictures to come in the morning.)
Tree is a very simple book, showing a tree through the seasons. There are cut outs showing little animals lliving in the branches as the seasons change, and wise old owl is pretty much constant. It’s the sort of book that cries out for an art project like the one on Playing by the book, we may well get inspired very soon.
Imelda and the Goblin King by Briony May Smith from Flying Eye Books is a fairy and goblin story about greed and bullying, problems solved with a little wood knowledge and imagination. My picture doesn’t do the wonderful cover justice – I just couldn’t get the gold to show up. Highly recommended and already a firm favourite at bedtime, and indeed other times of the day. (Can’t think *what* inspired our fairy hunt!)
