Getting back to my yarny roots.

I learnt to crochet when I was around 9 I think. My (first) step mum’s mum taught me. She had a soda stream as well – I loved visiting her, and was heartbroken when she disappeared from my life.

(I assume that was the marriage fell apart. I lost my step siblings too. Not a huge heap of fun. )

Anyway, crochet. I’ve always been able to. I’m way better at it than I am at knitting. I even designed my own doll dress pattern a while ago (I should probably test that pattern properly and re shoot the pic)

But a couple of years ago, I’m not sure when, I just sort of stopped. I’ve done a few little toys here and there, but nothing major. Then Smallest started agitating for slippers. And I went on Garnstudio. Before I knew it there was a pinterest board and a yarn order and so it began.

It feels kind of good, getting back into it.

  1. We used knit, my mum, msy sister and me. Then we realized that it was cheaper to buy a sweater than to buy the wool needed for it.
I did crochet the skullcaps for the men (just the close family) at my sister’s wedding and also for the three Bar Mitzvas of her sons. It was a labour of love eache time and took about 6 months. The oldrest nephew is 20 so I hpe it’s a few years before he decides to get married, LOL.
My mum knits squares and makes blankets for a charity that sends them to orphanages and other places around the world where they are needed – she says it keeps her hands busy while she’s watching tv so she doesn’t eat all evening.

I bought 5 balls of yarn, intended for two pairs of slippers and a crown and it came out to £10. I figure I could easily spend that on slippers and a toy, and this way Smallest gets a handmade thing that she very much wants as well. I agree though, often it’s cheaper to just buy the thing. I pinned a gorgeous jackety thing that I would love for myself, but the yarn would cost at least £50, so maybe not. (Although I do know that people often spend that much on an item of clothing. It’s all relative isn’t it?)

  2. Good on you. Inspired by that pink wool – is it from Nepal and/or company’s label? – to do some knitting next week. Never crochetted though – might look into it.

Yarn is from Drops and is called Nepal. It does have alpaca in it, I don’t know whether that’s the link. I find crochet much easier and quicker, and of course you can more easily do shaped things than you can with knitting.

  3. I learned in school at 11 and have only recently got back into it. I’m making a granny square blanket for the girls’ dolls at the moment but I’ll be working a full sized one once I feel practised enough. I’m also about to try knitting a square for a local cause. We’ll see how that goes!

The thing I love about granny square blankets is that it never feels like you’re committing to a huge piece. Also makes it a lot easier to carry the project with you to do on the go 🙂
Good luck with the knitting. (I do have some knitting on the go for Tudor times, and I’m trying to learn a different, faster style.)
