Carcraft and songs to make you drive happy.

Songs to make you drive happy

Recently we borrowed a car (yes, ours is still broken) and drove to Yorkshire. From here it’s about four hours – so I told Small to get four CDs, in their cases, and that would be our driving music.

I thought that was quite clear.

It wasn’t.

What we ended up with was four CD cases, two of which were double, but only three of the CDs that should have been in them. Gah. And none of them were Robbie Williams, so by the time we were driving back with an overtired Tigerboy, we couldn’t put on his sleepy music. No, I don’t know why Robbie Williams is his favourite driving music, but it is, OK? And if Big and I sing along to Strong he’s guaranteed to stop crying and start cooing.

Which brings me neatly to this survey Carcraft are running. They’re looking for the nation’s favourite driving tunes (feels like I should have typed that with a ch, but I’ll resist.) You can read all about it at Songs to make you drive happy. You can take part by tweeting your song with #carcraftsingalongs or joining in on their facebook page

Personally, if I was choosing for me, I’d probably go for something from Meatloaf. Or maybe I drove all night, just because it’s so evocative. But if I think about cars and music the one I can’t chase out of my head is Crying in the rain, that I played every day for about three weeks after my sister died, and which takes me instantly back to that old Merc and those roads between my house and my other sister’s, driving with tears dripping down my face and my voice cracking as I sang along.

Odd, isn’t it, how music cements memories for you?

I’d love to hear if there’s anything that holds that kind of significance for you.

Disclosure: Small was made very happy by a lovely thing arriving from Amazon in return for this post. As I assume you can tell, the words and emotions are all mine anyway.

  1. I like anything I can sing to! Have to be careful with the fast ones, because they make me drive faster, not always a good thing 😉
