We have tried Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy lessons and it didn’t really do anything for us.
We liked red nose readers (like this Bear’s Birthday (Red Nose Readers)), but they don’t last long enough!
We also tried Toe by Toe: Highly Structured Multi-Sensory Reading Manual for Teachers and Parents and it did kick start us.
What we have done is lots and lots of reading – reading to her, reading with her. There are books all over the house (quite literally) and I’ve been buying books that I thought would appeal. Apparently I’ve been missing the mark – she’s far more interested in reading my books that I’ve had since I was a child.
Back at melrose I did some tests with her, and it boosted her confidence immeasurably. I missed a trick, I think I should have been continuing to ‘test’ her to keep her going. She seems to thrive on being told how clever she is in comparison to what she would be expected to be doing at school. Perhaps that’s a drawback of home education, where she doesn’t get that peer comparision. I’d always assumed that would be a benefit, as I want her to believe in herself for herself, iyswim. Still, much testing and reinforcement going on atm, as it seems to be helping.
And with that in mind, I’ve gone to find the national literacy word lists. If I can persuade her that she already knows pretty much everything she needs to know to read, I think she will just get on with it.
