Saturday snippets 14 March 2015

{feeling} incredibly tired. So tired that I can’t quite see straight. (So why am I blogging instead of going to bed?) Because it’s snippets. Obviously.

{enjoying} so very much experimenting with art and colour, drawing, shape and form. I’m looking at the world differently – colours are pinging out at me, and I’m spotting blossoms that I wouldn’t have seen before, silhouettes, tiny dew drops and all sorts of things. I am wondering whether it’s at least partly my increased interest in photography that’s helped my interest in drawing – I’m seeing so much more, which makes drawing it so much easier.

{reading} not so much. Though many many picture books. A particularly lovely batch arrived from Faber Children’s this week – thank you.

{eating} bacon sandwiches. Need to shake up our menu a bit, we’ve fallen into a rut rather. Quick and easy ideas for fitting around various evening activities needed. Wish we had room for a slow cooker.

{wishing} I’d written up more of our home education this week, as now I can’t remember which bits were this week and which were last.

{soaking} up the sun, even while shivering. This week has been glorious, I’ve even managed to mostly dry washing outside. Which is blissful – I don’t mind airing it off overnight, but it smells so much better when it’s been outside for at least part of the day. We even made it to the beach, and we’ve had chalk and bubbles outside, as well as the box. It’s been fab.

{spending} my voucher winnings on more art stuff. Yay, thank you Britmums and Doddle.

{watching} Billy Madison. I think it was called that. Starred Adam Sandler, first (and last) time I’ve ever seen one of his films. It was dire. I don’t recommend the experience.

Big is mastering a new song most days on the guitar and has moved on to bodies in her art. We are amused that her anatomy for artists book misses out some parts of the anatomy ๐Ÿ˜‰ Small is waiting for more colours in the Letraset range, but had a lovely day at home ed group this week. Smallest has been drawing lots, some more writing (loved her spelling of her younger brother’s name today) and is thrilled that it’s getting towards gardening time again. Tigerboy is having a slightly rocky time at the moment – everything needs to be NOW. But he’s can (mostly) be defused with a cuddle, or a song, or a book, or some drawing.

And me?

I’ve read next to nothing this week. Shed more tears than I would have ever expected over the death of Terry Pratchett. And done more sketching and colouring and drawing.

{Watching} bits of the films daughter is watching with her friends for birthday film night. Including Dirty Dancing. Such a good film.

{Eating} birthday party food.

{Tidying} frantically so there would be enough room for 4 teen girls to sleep in the living room.

{Enjoying} discussing books with C, one of the visiting teens. Tim has been trying to get me to read Code Name Verity for ages. C independently recommended it tonight, so I’m starting it next.

{Combing} hair. Lots. And not really enjoying the smell of tea tree leave in conditioner.

{Listening} to teenage girls giggle. And take selfies. Lots and lots of selfies ๐Ÿ˜‰

Big got older ๐Ÿ™‚ and is celebrating it with friends, selfies and social media. Small is learning lots about networking minecraft, trouble shooting and now eats mushroom pizza. Smallest has her own minecraft profile and has been taming rabbits and horses. She can also write numbers above 10 which I didn’t know. Tigerboy is experimenting with reading and writing which is fascinating to watch.

Saturday Snippets 20 December 2014

20th December 2014 by Jax Blunt 5 Comments

{watching} The Santa Suit, in the hope of sparking some seasonal emotion. Starring Kevin Sorbo, sadly wearing Armani rather than leather ๐Ÿ˜‰ , it’s not Miracle on 34th Street (either version) but it’s OK. Definitely filled a couple of hours quite happily

{suffering} the after effects of camp lurgy. Last week was a write off after the journey home, followed by Tigerboy being very very ill the next night. Then I went down with it on Sunday, and poor Big faded on Friday night. All in all, that’s making getting festive very difficult.

{reading} frantically – I’m trying to finish up about 6 books I seem to have on the go at the same time. I also have a whole stack of titles that I haven’t reviewed that I’d like to work through, although I’m also going to be writing some more discussion style posts, like the one I put up yesterday. Turns out though that I’ve already hit my #read52 target for the year though, so that’s good, and everything else I do finish is a bonus.

{pondering} where I’d like to take this blog, my business, and my life next year. And also wondering what it is about dates and numbers that have such a powerful effect on the human psyche. Oh, and while I’m at it, Happy Solstice (because it will be by the time you’re reading this, given as usual I’m writing it).

{eating} not very much food. Side effect of the entire family being off colour is at least that I’m not having to do a lot of cooking. Which is really rather worrying. So much so that I waded through the system to get Tigerboy to the doctor just to get his chest checked (he’s coughed himself sick so many times this week, including 5 o clock one morning which was jolly fun). Turns out he’s clear at the moment, so it’s just watch and wait until he shifts the virus, and I do have to say, touch wood, he was a lot brighter this evening.

{choosing} a word for the year. From instagram to Dorkymum I was led to Susannah Conway Unravelling the year, which I’m going to do as my solstice task for myself. And then I’m going to choose a word for next year, to give me some focus, something I’m often very lacking. I may try to summarise this year in a word too.

#52memories I’ve really enjoyed doing these, and I’m going to be keeping it up next year too.

Big is moving her drawing on, which is great to see. Small is becoming very independent, and has done his own Christmas planning and shopping. Smallest was the child with the reaction to my new haircut – what happened to your hair? I don’t like it. You have L’s hair. Tigerboy, it seems, is able to recognise numbers, type, and is pretty good with a keyboard. I remember buying Big a fake mouse thing when she was this age because we didn’t know any better. With this guy we try to remember to set passwords on everything to keep him out!

Saturday Snippets 15 November 2014

15th November 2014 by Jax Blunt 2 Comments

{thinking} it’s been an odd week. From last weekend in London, birthday celebrations for Smallest on Monday, attempting so much stuff and managing so little, via a surge of grief on Thursday and then family gathering today. I could do with a holiday. On an island. With someone else doing the cooking. Please?

{grieving} again, always, suddenly, quietly, angrily, painfully. Sandbagged by grief, gut punched by grief, ambushed by anger, and sadness, and regret and loss. I’ve written a thing that I may not ever publish but do you know what? You don’t have the right to hurt people casually. In passing. In self justification. You just don’t.

{drinking} hot chocolate and baileys. If I can find the baileys. I’m sure we had baileys. How long does it last? The alcohol is a preservative right?

{watching} Mr and Mrs Smith. High body count, although mainly unseen, and quite neat and tidy. Apart from the person to person fight, which is rather unpleasant. (Had seen film before and edited that bit out. Odd.) Not a suitable film for young children, but our two had fallen asleep thankfully. Our first netflix outing ๐Ÿ™‚

{receiving} lots of very lovely post. See instagram (feel free to follow me, I’m very low traffic on there, and it’s mainly sky and cups of hot chocolate) and also paragraph above ๐Ÿ™‚

{eating} party food. Lots and lots of party food. And just in case we hadn’t had enough, we brought back extra cake. Sadly the children discovered they *do* like cream scones so I don’t get to eat 4 of them like I’d planned.

{reading} odd one. I started a netgalley last night, and I don’t know whether it’s possible for those files to corrupt or what, but it had loads of missing letters? I couldn’t read it. Can you feed that back to the publishers and get a new copy, anyone know? So that threw me off rather, so I don’t think I’ve finished anything this week. Which is annoying.

Smallest got older ๐Ÿ™‚ She was wonderful and lovely, and so very proud of having cake and presents and post. Big made a big stride with her drawing, when she accepted that she was improving and was pleased with a picture. Small got his first pay packet, and spent it instantly on a game he’s been wanting very much. I assume he’ll be writing that up, he’s certainly been keeping copious notes. Tigerboy has been a bundle of mischief this week – I walked in the kitchen one day and he’d filled my coffee cup up with apple juice. He’s going to be a handful.

{watching} Casper. We started off watching Wheels on Meals, which I was expected to be standard Jackie Chan/ Sammo Hung fare, but it turned out to actually be in chinese. After 10 minutes of Smallest requesting Small to read all the subtitles, we quit and found Casper just about to start on TV. So it wasn’t much of a family film night, as the older ones of us drifted away having seen it before. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen it all actually. I’ve still no idea what happens in the end.)

{reading} My Age of Anxiety. I have my own theories about this one. But I’ll reserve them until I’m done reading. And I’ve decided that everything that gets started will get noted, and everything that gets finished will get reviewed. And I’m going to be backdating a bunch of stuff that I’ve read and didn’t want to review at the time. Generally speaking around 10-20 people read my reviews, positive or negative (ignoring the autism book reviews, which can get hundreds of views in a day, particularly if shared by the publisher). I’m going to try to go back to reviewing picture books on Shingle Street up to 5 times a week, and we’ll see how it all goes.

{writing} Nano. I took the plunge and started right after midnight last night. I did two batches of writing in the first day, taking my count up to 3469 (though annoyingly I put the second batch in after midnight so it’s showing as assigned to day 2. Hohum. (twitches slightly). My minimal planning in the form of day to day storyboarding is working quite well to give me a focus without confusing me. Probably am going to need some character sheets at some point though. As of yet I haven’t installed any of the productivity apps I’ve had PR emails about (seriously) but I might get round to it at some point. If you’re using anything you’d recommend, let me know?

Big has spent the week scaring. I think this is her longest stretch away from home so far, and future echoes are loud. Small has stepped up to the mark and been fab with the younger ones in her absence – he is very very patient, as long as he’s getting some lone screen time. Smallest sat down and read to me again this week, she’s getting quite proficient in her own quietly determined way. And Tigerboy was discharged from speech therapy this week, so that was pretty big for him too.

Me? Not a lot to report. But I’ve started Nano. So that’s something. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m writing.
