Birds and building and 1920s dresses.

I did myself a list of things to do with children the other day. Perhaps because we’re all here, all the time, (well, not actually all the time, but you know what I mean) it can be easy to get into a rut, where the same things happen, and the same things don’t happen. We’ve […]

Learning from sewing

I lost a week last week, a week that I’d got a lot of sewing lined up for. So now I’m sewing through the headache. I’ve discovered that if I sit outside the headache is lower – today is the first day I haven’t needed any painkillers. (I’ve even managed to cut down on the […]

Looking back and forward to Kentwell Hall.

Challenged to find a picture of my favourite holiday destination for this Al Fresco Holidays blog competition, I couldn’t resist the chance to wax lyrical about Kentwell Hall and reenactment once again. It’s an odd choice of holiday. It’s hard work for one, but I suppose it’s the change is as good as a rest […]

Have finally worked out where I went wrong and have a plan for the next jacket with a different sleeve shape. {Learning} to felt a hat. {Eating} pottage and frumenty and stewed apples. {Sheltering} from the rain. {Experiencing} community. {Missing} dry feet! {Savouring} my last trip to 1559 for […]

Goodwife Joan of the barnschool.

Meet Goodwife Joan of the barnschool at Kentwell Hall. She also has her son Cal with her. They are standing in the door of the great barn, you can see the barnsward behind them. Joan rises early and breaks her fast in little melford. She may have chores to do before she comes to work […]

Snack time

Unseemly children without their head covers.

Which has no problems with pacing 😉 {Visiting} kentwell Hall for a sewing day in preparation for tudor times ahead. Lots of costume changes afoot. {Eating} McDonald’s, as we […]

{lighting} a fire for cooking on {wearing} kirtle, shift and all {carrying} a baby {making} new friends {missing} my older boy and dp {eating} pottage, frumenty, and fried worts {listening} to the gentle patter of rain on a tent {enjoying} High Summer at Kentwell hall and glorious evening storm with following sunset.

Ten things I’ve learnt at Kentwell hall, including tudor factoids.

Marigold is good for bites and stings. Way better than the various creams and lotions I was carrying, and much more authentically tudor to be stained green. Sod means mustard. You get sod eggs, amongst other things and they are fabulous. Girls did not start having babies young. You didn’t get married/have babies til you […]

Those layers of clothing from 1556.

Back at home from our Tudor sojourn at Kentwell Hall, and I’m picking through the costume bags, sighing at how badly the linen has frayed in the shifts I made, and looking at all the repairs I have to do. I think it might actually work better to take the shifts apart and re sew […]
