Go on, you know you want to.
It's life Jim
But not posted on Friday night as I was in a field. Well, for some of it, quite a lot of it was spent drinking wine in a nearby house.
The week before. No walking (no cat to feed). No library trip, got books to read before that happens. Did a bit of reading, started We don’t play with guns here: War, Weapon and Superhero Play in the Early Years (Debating Play) which is indeed interesting, not least in understanding the mindset of many ppl who’ve purposely gone to work with children. (I seem to have just arrived there, rather than chosen it specifically, if you see what I mean).
Finished my first assignment, which was immensely difficult only in that I was working on it immediately before the phone call about Katrin, and every time I picked it up I was right back to that night. In the end took it into school and worked in a completely different environment and got it knocked off in under an hour. Hoping I’ve done enough to get through it, really do not want to have to pick that one up again.
Took a couple of trips out, one to the park, and another to the National Media Museum. That’s one that really needs more time than we had, so we might go again some time soon.
Big and Small only came into school on Friday again, and that seemed to work pretty well for them. We are thinking that next term she’ll do four days and he’ll do three, which I think will be ample. He was fun this weekend, he seems to be investigating what you can do with numbers and operations – has figured out that addition is commutative, but subtraction (also known as minus or take away) isn’t.
Still looking for a third candidate for PIF, any more takers? If not, I’ll do it with two 🙂
And the weekend. Friday night, much wine, much talking, little sleeping. Slight amusement when it was discovered Tim had come without my bag – only real problem there was the complete lack of vision I have. He went home for it on Saturday, and while he was away the wind got up and I ended up dropping the tent, fearing that it wouldn’t survive otherwise. This meant we had to come home to sleep on Saturday evening, though we went back this morning (missing the beans by about half an hour I think 🙁 ) and spent the day again. Must must must remember to check Small’s assumptions at the door – he thought we were going back to camp today and was somewhat upset to discover we weren’t. He just wants to spend time in a tent – I think that’s his definition of summer, as it’s the way he’s holidayed every year since he was just under 1.
Tent is currently out on line, we need to go get it in now. Good night.
tomorrow one of my colleagues has the day of work to go to the funeral of a friend, who has died suddenly leaving behind a 4 year old and a 3 month old. No one knows who the father of the 3 month old is, and she will never know her mother now.
I can do nothing but think of her. It’s nowhere near enough.
Been working pretty hard this weekend, though not quite as successfully as I’d like, and so we don’t seem to have done much that’s terribly exciting. The good news is that Big is getting much better at entertaining herself, has begun to turn the television off, or request the radio on (! I’ve got a rock chick daughter….I can’t begin to explain how proud this makes me 🙂 ), and every now and then gets stuck into doing something quite weighty.
So we had the alphabet thing, and she followed that up with some Studydog, although we are having some problems with that, it doesn’t seem to be properly registering which bits she’s done. Or maybe I just don’t understand it 😉
Last night over the course of her bath we had *lots* of conversations along the line of what time is it now, and I steadfastly resisted the urge to reply “30 seconds after the *last* time you asked” and we worked it out. This ended up involving quite a bit of 5 times table stuff – she only asks when the big hand is pointing at a number…I also resisted the urge to try to sneak in a lesson on fractions. See Joyce, it is beginning to sink in!
I’d really like it if she cracked telling the time, and then I’d like it even more if she actually used that knowledge – her storytime is 7.30 and I spend the 30 or so minutes she is in the bath pointing out how near we are getting to 7.30 and getting increasingly stressed about it. Tonight I didn’t bother – extremely liberating. Must try that more often.
Did get another square done though. Rather like this one, it’s an excellent pattern, called Velvet and Lace Even better, I didn’t need the extra fudging round…although I think it did take me about 1 1/2 hours to do, not quite so good.
Other downsides – I’ve had to postpone my java exam again. I just am not getting the studying done. I’ve decided to talk to Big about this though – it’s daft to be waiting to study at night, surely it will be good for her to see that I learn things too? Still not quite sure how I’m going to work this round though.
Sure there was something else I was going to blog….something to do with Small for a change. Nope, can’t think of it. He’s ever so funny at the moment, trying so hard to do the same things that Big does. So today he was strutting around in a pair of her high heel dress up shoes (good sense of balance, and major tantrum when I refused to let him climb up and down the concrete step in them!), then when she did some drawing with her Barbie Dress designer thing he had to do some too….beautiful carpet patterns he produced!
Oh well, I’m not going to remember it am I? I did take a trip to the Works this afternoon though, I remembered that 😉
Took me and Big a couple of hours yesterday – some experimentation about how best to make the joints and so on, and a fair bit of time with me cutting up bits of straw, but we both had a great time.
And I think I’m in love – how cool is this house? I mean, it’s already got the most important room in there….anyone know of a nice cheap building plot?
