I don’t seem to have had time for any reading for myself this week. But we got a fabulous book through for Smallest to review, and it’s been a great one to spend lots of time talking to her about. It’s called Just Imagine and is illustrated by Nick Sharratt, who is one of our favourite illustrators, and has been ever since we first discovered Q Pootle 5. It’s just full of the most wonderful imagery, with prompts for discussion and so much to look at, it’s been a real joy to spend time with. There is one page that I find slightly overwhelming in that there’s almost too much colour and picture involved, but Smallest has no such qualms and has spent a huge amount of time pouring over the pictures, asking questions and making up stories. It seems to have fired her imagination off in all sorts of fascinating directions, which is just wonderful to see.
It amuses me that the title of the competition prizes follows on so neatly from the title of Smallest’s picture book. Our competition prizes this week are supplied direct by WW Norton Books – I’m happy to be able to giveaway 5 (yes, that’s five!) copies of What are They Thinking?! which comes out next Friday.
Ideal for parents of tweens and teens the blurb says:
The Straight Facts about the Risk-Taking, Social-Networking, Still-Developing Teen Brain
AARON WHITE AND SCOTT SWARTZWELDER
With recent developments in digital communication, it seems today’s teenagers are in for a more complicated journey than ever before. Even the most “in-touch” parents might throw their hands up in frustration at their teenager’s behaviour and ask: what are they thinking?!
Teenagers’ thrill-seeking activities and quests for independence aren’t just the result of raging hormones but rather effects of the structure and development of the adolescent brain. In easily navigable chapters, the authors draw from recent studies to illuminate the complexities of issues such as school, social networking and mental health in children whose crucial brain connections are just coming online.
Sounds like an extremely useful book to me 😉 all you need to do to enter is leave me a comment telling me why you’d like to win.
The competition closes next Thursday 16th May at midnight so that I can announce the winners next Friday. And you can have an extra entry for sharing this post, using the badge on your own blog, joining the linky with your own Read52 post, or liking the WW Norton facebook page here – but you must leave an extra comment for each thing you’ve done, telling me what it is. This competition is only open to UK and you must be prepared for me to pass your details to the publishers for them to fulfil the prize if you win. Draw will be made using the lovely plugin and the winner is, which relies on separate comment entries.

The background: I’ve challenged Big to read 52 books this year. She will probably be mentioning them over here on her blog. I’m also going to have a crack at reading at least 52 books myself, and more importantly, I’m going to keep track of what books I’m reading to the little ones. I’m going to do all of that in a weekly post, and I’ve also set up a google plus community which you’re very welcome to join. (If you need an invitation, leave me a comment using relevant email address – which will stay hidden.)
