A nintendo wii, a media centre and a parenting fail.

I know it’s hard to believe, but until very recently the only games console we had in this house was Big’s handheld, a nintendo dslite, bought for her by a whole bunch of friends for her birthday. Then last week we gave Small a dsi for his birthday, mainly so that he would have it while on a plane and abroad with no access to a computer. (Small needs his screen time. It allows him to recharge and come back out smiling. A week without it would have resulted in a very unhappy boy.)

Today, on rather a roll from all that, I decided it was finally time to splurge on a Wii. I’d done lots of market research on twitter and come to the conclusion that it was the right console for us as a family, allowing for sufficient players at any given time, with family friendly active games, and finally, at a decent price at Argos. (99.99 including Sports, Sports resort and remoteplus, plus a second game and second controller for another ??20 quid.) So I reserved it online and we all traipsed down to pick it up.

Big mistake. Huge.

You see, we don’t have a television. We have a media centre and a monitor, and Nintendo don’t do connectors for monitors. I find this utterly bewildering – we surely can’t be that unusual in this day and age? I’m sure we have friends who use media centres instead of pcs, and I just assumed that Nintendo would want to make their console available to all. Instead it says in the manual that they recommend using pcs and don’t approve any alternative connectors.

So now I have ??120 pounds worth of absolutely useless gaming gear, two exceedingly unhappy children who have been hoping for a games console for years and a somewhat fraught dp driving round Suffolk trying to find somewhere open on a Bank Holiday that can sell him the connector he needs to make it all work.

Nintendo, I am seriously unimpressed.

thanks. Bought Just Dance 2 at the same time – was ¡ò20 for a game and extra controller if bought with the Wii. It really was an excellent deal. Just peeved at the rest of it.

Oh, that’s such a shame but it will be worth it once you’re all set up.
We love the family games like Just Dance and Wii Sing.
