Growing up.

Today I did a thing that surprised me. I bought a phone and contract for Big – I’m going to give it to her for her birthday. It was a pretty good deal, offered because of my loyalty to the network concerned, and I’m hoping the phone I’ve chosen for her will make her happy. Can’t quite decide whether to give it as a birthday or Christmas present – think it might be birthday but seems daft for it to sit in a box for a couple of weeks.

She’s growing up. I know there weren’t things like mobile phones when I was 12, but if there had been, I probably wouldn’t have been that interested. I was very immature in a lot of ways. Big is far more grown up than me, and it’s hard balancing the child she is with the woman she is becoming.

Take online life. She’s still too young, according to t & c, to have a facebook account. But so much of her life is online, particularly with her having friends all around the country. She’s already started asking me to buy things for her – saving her pocket money to spend at Amazon. Makes me wonder about alternative online payment solutions, and how they will play a part in her life in future. There must be safe ways that I can allow her to manage her money and yet still buy from the places that I prefer too.

It’s a brave new world, this digital society. One thing is for sure, nothing about it is standing still.
