Positive publicity for home education posts.

How to improve searchability of your home education posts.
I’m generally talking about on blogs here – places like facebook have odd privacy rules that means it’s difficult to say what is searchable and what isn’t.
The best way to raise the profile of something you’ve enjoyed is to publicise it. Link to it on your blog, [...]

If it’s Friday it must be Framlingham (again :) )

Friday heralded our last time travellers trip to Framlingham for the summer. We’d already finished the passports and put them in the post, and Small’s bag arrived in the morning. It’s not desperately exciting, but it will serve to remind him of the activities Am hoping that Big’s bag arrives very soon, as [...]

Home education – why and how? Call for posts

In the past I’ve read some really inspiring posts on various ppl’s blogs on the why and how of how they came to home education and how it works for them as a family now.
I’d love to read some more of those posts, either updates from ppl who’ve written them before, or a first think [...]

Forest school and swimming.

Falling behind in blogging again, it really won’t do!
End of the month Thursday, so it was Forest School. I thought I’d got up in ample time to get us ready to go, but I had, as usual, underestimated the time required to talk Small into leaving the house. He is incredibly activity resistant atm, or [...]

Superheroes galore!

Weds morning escapes me, probably involved screen time of putering and/or tv. Intended to get out for shortly after lunchtime, then aimed at 3 o’clock, actually left the house at 3.30 – questseekers is only open til 4, so was feeling slightly stressed by this point.
Small returned You’re a Bad Man, Mr. Gum! and is [...]

Summer bad for your child’s brain?

What about the rest of the year?
References John Holt, who was one of the resources that introduced home education to me. It’s great stuff, if you haven’t read it I suggest you do, try How Children Learn and How Children Fail for good starting points.

Swimming, beach and quiet afternoon.

Last Tuesday morning swim – next week it reverts to evening sessions. Got up to find that the loo wouldn’t flush, didn’t appear to be refilling with water. Odd, but assumed it would be something Tim would sort out.
(Yes, I know that doesn’t sound very feminist, but Tim knows way more about looking after houses [...]

Green paper on benefit cuts.

Anyone currently getting DLA/ AA probably ought to know about this, a green paper on cutting disability benefits, and instead turning them into an allowance that’s managed by local social services.
Campaign against it over here. There are links to the green paper and so on.

Washing and sewing and stropping and stuff

Despite recent suggestions otherwise, the children are still addicted to screen time. I’m not quite sure what to do about it – I’d like to let them autonomously work through it, but behaviour deteriorates rapidly around here if they do nothing but stare at flickering images or play puter games, and I’m not sure I [...]

Sunday sun.

Bil was very organised this morning and struck the tent before the preteens were awake. Well, the second bedroom and the outer anyway. When they woke up and stumbled out he asked them if anything was missing.
“Um, the washing line?”
“What, not the tent?”
doh. They breakfasted and putered, and Big taught Princess and Scott how [...]

5 children, 2 puters, 1 website.

Not a particularly good combination for a harmonious morning! Despite their late night, all children were up reasonably early, although the preteens were the last, unsurprisingly. They mainly managed to play on moshi monsters – there was an attempt to play monopoly junior, but it was abandoned on the bedroom floor after not very long.
Adults [...]

Questseekers and cousins.

Friday morning, we managed to locate all library books, and persuade Small that he needed to take some of them back. He was not very happy about this. He hasn’t read quite a few of them – he tends to start reading them and then get distracted on to something else, which is not a [...]

sylvanian families

for Kirsty/ Helen

click on the thumbnails for the full size images. You can’t see prices on many of them I’m afraid (should have got Tim to do it, his phone seems to work better as a camera!) but everything is 20% off marked price anyway.
The thing on the top is a department store, [...]

Moping about

Was woken by screaming on Thursday morning, never a good start to the day. Came down to discover the children hiding in the hall, refusing to go into the kitchen as they’d “seen something.” The something in question turned out to be a moth, so I was even less impressed.
They developed these phobias at school, [...]

Maths, Time travelling and scanning

Can’t quite remember how I got into the battle with Big Wednesday morning over her maths, but we did. From being thrilled with the new books, she’s now back into full resistant maths is boring mode. But I put my foot down and required her to do some – I feel that she needs to [...]

Another swimming and midwife day.

Last but one morning swimming session – on some levels I will be glad when they revert (although having them in the evening has its own challenges, mainly around fitting in tea!) as it is increasingly difficult to get Small going on a morning. If Big wakes him up it seems to be OK, but [...]

What is it about Mondays?

Not our best day of the week.
Not quite sure what went on, but do know it ended with Big gaining herself computer and tv ban for the following day, due to attitudinal issues.
She recovered it slightly in the evening, and did some handwriting practise – I don’t know how she achieved it, but [...]

What’s it all for?

The parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him to receive efficient full-time education suitable-
(a) to his age, ability and aptitude, and
(b) to any special educational needs he may have,
either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.
So what’s a suitable education?
From Home Education.org.uk
1.5 There is no absolute definition of what a suitable [...]

Space party

it took longer than anticipated to finish off Tim’s costume and make Big’s though the constant interruptions and heckling from the offspring really didn’t help. So we set off about the time the party was due to start. Sigh.
Still arrived with plenty of time to spend with friends though, so that was good
Great [...]

Make it sew.

Friday we all went out and bought stuff to make costumes for the Bean’s space themed party. The day seemed to evaporate around that – I had to walk down to the fabric shop for some extra bits, and I sauntered And on the way back Tim’s sister in law was in her [...]
