Major discovery from MIT primed to unleash solar revolution – MIT News Office

In a revolutionary leap that could transform solar power from a marginal, boutique alternative into a mainstream energy source, MIT researchers have overcome a major barrier to large-scale solar power: storing energy for use when the sun doesnt shine.

I wish I understood this, but at least it sounds hopeful.

  1. Tim says:

I saw this yesterday. I have never understood why we can’t use solar power to pump water up to a water tower, and use hydro-electric power at night.

  2. Bob says:

Water storage of power is good in theory, but I don’t know if there’s an adequate supply of suitable hills in Wales waiting to be hollowed out.

Also I don’t know how efficient it is – I’d be interested to see how the efficiency of this groovy new room-temperature pH-neutral electrolysis compares with pumping water up and down in Wales.

  3. Ron says:

We have alot of hydro dams here, so we could use solar during the day and hold the water for the night. There is a community outside of Calgary that gets 90% of its energy from solar.
