geodesic dome mark whatever it is

last week I started cutting up straws with a three year old to make a geodesic dome model. She wasn’t in again then until this morning, and she walked straight up to me and said “I want to make our model”. So I spent the whole morning making a scale model of a geodesic dome. Then we handed out slips of paper to parents requesting newspapers so that we can make a full size one next week in the playground. Actually, the way the children have reacted, I think I’ll be doing it more than one day so that most of them can have a go :)

I’ve no idea why children react so positively to this particular activity, I just know that every time we’ve done it, (and I’ve lost count as to whether it’s twice now, or maybe three times, plus a scale model at home) they really enjoy it. It can’t just be turning paper into a den that’s exciting as I was getting the same reaction to building a small one with straws and pipe cleaners today – and I’ve got to write something up to give to the various fascinated parents as well. Nice to know I’m starting to earn my keep ;)

In other news, I think this whole being active thing is good for me. I’ve lost the best part of a stone since I started working there (as far as I can tell, we didn’t have any scales kicking about until a couple of weeks back!) and I think it’s just because I’m not sitting on my backside all day any more. I rarely get to just sit on my backside – I get a break at lunchtime but other than that I’m on the go most of the day. This evening I was late leaving as I finished up the planting I started with the children’s house this afternoon – they ran out of time but plants don’t really understand that concept ;) I’m guessing that once I get over this foul lurgy I’ve got, I’m going to feel healthier than I have done in a long time (at least, I’m hoping that’s the way it’s going to go :( ). I could do still with there being a couple more hours in the day but at least I’m not losing three of them to driving any more!

oh I *need* to do this. Sad I know, but being the ‘cars’ fans we are, we want to make a model of fillmore’s geodesic dome. a big one would be a cool idea too.

Hope you do feel healthier once you get over the lurgy. Shall look forward to seeing a new you soon then eh?

Building things (particularly structures) was important to all 4 of ours. Among them they used lots of paper, tape and other supplies.

thank you!! Just suggested it for our next HE meeting. I remember making shelters at primary school out of newspaper and tarpaulins and sleeping in them over night!
