Amelie is mid death-hysteria too, all of mine seem to have done it about the age of 5, thoguh Amelie has had it compounded by an actual death.

Personally i find that sympathetic but brisk works best, plus a certain eventual intolerance for dwelling (afterall, we basically just have to get on with the fact that death exists in the end!)

having said that, with Amelie i have ended up assuring her that death is probably just one big party afterlife; i'll deal with the fallout of that later!

M does the crying at dying thing too. It's a really hard one to deal with isn't it? It just hits him every so often and will conume him for ages, then goes away again. No tips I'm afraid.
