Personally i find that sympathetic but brisk works best, plus a certain eventual intolerance for dwelling (afterall, we basically just have to get on with the fact that death exists in the end!) having said that, with Amelie i have ended up assuring her that death is probably just one big party afterlife; i'll deal with the fallout of that later!
