    And this is the reason I’ve never upgraded from WIN98 (NOT ME) - the last really stable windows platform.

    Okay, well, that’s not entirely true - there are less ancient computers in the house - but this is the one I prefer - it’s been going strong for a decade with no blue screen of death.

    There are alternatives to Microsoft (read Linux, OpenOffice,…) — you may want to consider them if it’s getting too frustrating the way it is now.

    .. and now that Dell are shipping hardware with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed, that’s an even more realistic option. It can run Windows under VMware .. so you can get the best of both worlds.
