My record of successful purchases is, in fact, generally good but the failures have left terrible scars. When they've decided they've gone off the pair they liked two days before, or decided they hurt or whatever, I try moral blakcmail by reminding them that in my day we were glad of any pair of shoes, how we used to have to go the blacksmith to have them fitted and how our dad used to flog us if we cried when the nails went in.
