Erm...are you saying that you would prefer to get your £gazillion bill for replacement as the first correspondance about the overdue book?

Losing a couple of reminder letters from the process is not going to bring the cost of the fine down, as Allie and Kath say, there is lots of human checking to be done before they can be sure you are responsible for the missing book.

Now, while on some level I would agree with you Allie, and I will either return the book or deal with it in whatever other way, there is also the fact that they do send endless reminders and with the children's books, and especially at the moment, I've got into the habit of forgetting when the books are due and relying on the little reminder slips. Books borrowed on children's tickets don't incur fines here. I did think I *had* returned this book as I didn't get a reminder for it when I got reminders for a couple of the children's books that I knew we hadn't taken back.

I'm not making any sense here, what I'm trying to say is that they are setting up a bad system - teaching ppl to rely on reminders rather than developing personal responsibility. While I do fully accept that it's *is* my responsibility to return books I've borrowed, it's difficult to develop the right attitude to it given that we *do* get teh reminders. Does that make any more sense? Probably not!

Happy birthday to Big for tomorrow!

Yes - you'll probably find that you're being charged a £5 admin fee. When you think of this in terms of staff time (checking the shelves to make sure the book hasn't been returned - probably several times, costing replacement, and the processing of the replacement copy)I don't think that's bad really, is it?

Sorry but the librarian in me says it's up to the person who borrowed the book to renew/return it on time, without endless reminders. After all, the books are there for everyone to share and while you've got it no-one else can have it... Nag, nag, nag ;-)

Hm, I would have thought the fine ought to cover most of those costs, that's separate to the book replacement and is £4+ as well.
