Joe played up for two minutes this morning too, until I said he wouldn't be able to go to the birthday party they were all invited to this afternoon, and I definitely would have followed through on that one - thankfully I didn't have to either and he joined in ... Glad you won.....this time ;-) I suppose in our family the kids really do associate their birthday with a cake so this tactic would have been rather negative.....i.e. a punishment for bad behaviour.
